Keeping Roads in Essex safe for everyone

Our Roads Policing Unit will take part in a month-long national operation to tackle road-related crime across Essex, aiming to keep all road users safe.
Throughout April, our Roads Policing Unit (RPU) will carry out enforcement activities in support of a national road safety operation to identify drivers who flout the law and Highway Code, display poor and dangerous driving and whose driving poses a threat to the safety of other road users by focussing on offences known collectively as the Fatal Four.

Roads Policing Inspector Tim Swain said:
We want to keep our roads safe for everyone, that’s why we’re supporting this national campaign.
Our policing activities will focus on four specific offences that contribute to fatal collisions each year and we’re asking all drivers to reflect on your own driving and where necessary, to make some positive changes that could in the long run, lead to better road safety for all.
Road safety is a priority for us, and we will do all we can to keep our roads safe. But an important aspect to our work involves social responsibility by which we ask the public to get involved and work with us, supporting our efforts so that we can all benefit from safe roads.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council-led operation will focus on targeting speeding drivers, non-seatbelt wearing drivers or passengers and those distracted by using their mobile phones whilst in charge of their vehicle or driving. In addition, they will ensure that motorists who are unfit to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs are taken off the road.
The roads policing inspector went on to explain:
Anyone who learns to drive works hard to obtain their licence and we want them to keep it by adhering to the rules of the road and by upholding the law.
Responsible drivers will, for instance, keep to the speed limits and drive to the road conditions, and we’d like everyone to be a responsible driver and do all they can to keep themselves and others safe.
Also, it makes sense to wear your seat belt, but there are some drivers who don’t and when we speak to them, they make excuses. But excuses won’t keep you safe.
Make sure you wear your seatbelt and check that your passengers are wearing theirs too – it could save your life.

Throughout the road safety operation, our officers will be working alongside partners to highlight poor driving standards, educate drivers and enforce the law.
Essex Police are part of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) and fully support Vision Zero, our ambition to have zero road deaths in Essex by 2040 or sooner.
Will Cubbin, Partnership Manager for SERP, said:
To achieve Vision Zero we will need a reduction of 113 fatal and serious injury collisions, per year. Zero is the only number we can accept. We all have a part to play in this and we need the support of every single road-user.

Roads Policing officers will be carrying out a variety of activities in support of the NPCC’s national operation and, more locally, Vision Zero.
