Chelmsford: Charges in prison smuggling investigation

Main article content

News

Officers have secured charges against two people as part of an investigation into the smuggling of goods into a prison.

Our prison liaison team has been working in partnership with HMP Chelmsford to identify individuals suspected of being involved in the throwing of a parcel over the prison wall.

The parcel was recovered and found to contain mobile phones, sim cards and a quantity of cannabis and tobacco.

This investigation resulted in the execution of warrants at two addresses in Witham.

Two arrests were made.

Charges have since been secured against Victoria Jaggers, 50, and Harrison Madge, 19, both of Ness Walk, Witham.

They are charged with conspiring to bring an unauthorised article into a prison and appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Friday 20 December.

Both were released on bail with conditions attached until a further hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday 17 January.

We work closely with prison colleagues

Inspector Sam Girdlestone, of Chelmsford Community Policing Team, said:

“We work in close partnership with colleagues at HMP Chelmsford to monitor, deter and detect illicit activity.
“These charges are testament to that positive relationship.
“The smuggling of drugs and phones into the prison environment is unacceptable and will be treated very seriously.”

Tell us what you know

What you know could be the missing puzzle piece we’re looking for.

We know that information held by our communities can help us to keep people safe and catch criminals.

We also know that our communities need to trust that we will listen to them and take action when we need to.

Our Police Intelligence page explains what happens when you tell us something you've seen or heard. It explains what to expect and what we need to know when you give us information.

If you see or hear something that doesn’t seem right or causes you concern, we want you to tell us about it.
