Southend Specials gave up their time to ‘takeover’ policing in the district. Our volunteer Specials supported regular officers in Southend by leading on the response to emergency calls.
Special Constables are volunteer police officers. They have the same police powers, uniforms and equipment as regular police officers. But they give up their their free time to help their communities.
The 'takeover' came about following it's previous success. Our Specials support our regular officers in Southend by leading on the response to emergency calls.
64 more hours of policing
The Specials responded to, and managed, many incidents as part of the takeover. Special Inspector, Samantha Wright said:
"I'm very proud to lead a great team of Special Constables in Southend. We contributed 64 hours of policing on Saturday night, 3 February. That's 64 more hours of police support for our communities in Southend. And we were able to use our training and skills to support our full-time police colleagues too. "I'm grateful for all that our volunteer police officers do to protect and support the Southend community. They use their police skills along with experience from their life outside policing, to help the community they serve. "They really do make a difference and work hard to keep Southend safe."
Professional and dedicated
Superintendent Leigh Norris, Operations Lead for South Local Policing Area, said:
“This is another example of the excellent work of Special Inspector Wright and her team of volunteer police officers. Their regular support allows the officers on duty to progress existing investigations without the service we provide the public being compromised. I am very grateful to her and her team for their continued help.”
Special Inspector Wright added:
“Our Specials are professional and dedicated officers. They are committed to tackling the issues that matter most to our communities and, of course, helping people. “It’s a very rewarding role where you can use your existing skills and experience to help people. I would recommend anyone who is looking for a new challenge this year to join us.”
