Meet Inspector Rosie Emery. She is part of our local policing team (LPT) in Chelmsford and Maldon and believes it’s the best job on the force.
Find out more about her role and juggling work and parenthood.
"I am currently an Inspector on the Local Policing Team (LPT) at Chelmsford and Maldon. I have always been a front-line officer, and I believe it’s the best job in the force. I love the diversity of it. I could spend the morning shooing sheep off the A12 and my afternoon speaking to the victim of a domestic incident. You won’t find another job like it.
"I am also a maternity single point of contact (SPOC) for officers within the force. I have had two babies whilst employed by Essex Police and I was promoted to Inspector whilst on maternity leave. Having been supported by my supervisors whilst I was pregnant, I wanted to pass on my experiences and ensure that others receive the same treatment. Being a working parent is tough, but the rewards are worth it."
"I joined initially as a Special Constable in 2008. I did this role for 4 years before making the leap to become a full-time officer in 2012. I would definitely recommend anyone that has an interest in the police to consider joining the specials.
"As cliché as it is, joining the police was a dream for me since I was a teenager. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than the office job I had fallen in to in my 20’s, and I worked really hard to achieve my dream."
"I really enjoy seeing the “butterfly effect” of our role. An officer can have what they perceive to be a really minor positive interaction with a member of the public, which can go on to have a really significant impact on their life.
"From speaking to children in a primary school or supporting a victim through the criminal justice system, you never know how you will change someone’s life. To be part of that positive change is so rewarding."
"As well as having a fulfilling empowering career, I have made some lifelong friends along the way. It is important to surround yourself with those that can understand your job and the unique stresses that police officers can suffer.
"Additionally, I love making my family proud and being a positive role model for my two boys."
"I am trained as a response driver. However, the most valuable training I have had is as a Family Liaison Officer (FLO). As a FLO I have been deployed into families that have suffered the worst crimes. Being that person to that family is something that cannot be underestimated and I found it one of the most valuable and humbling experiences I have ever had."
"Keep an open mind and say yes!
"Every day the organisation offers new and different opportunities. Officers often join the job with a fixated idea of where they want to go within the force, so will turn down other opportunities and roles.
"Your career with Essex Police is vast and can be so varied if you want it to be. So, say yes!"
At Essex Police, we value difference. We know we’re strongest when we work together. And we want a workforce that represents our communities.
If you share our values and want to help people, keep people safe and catch criminals, then join us as a police officer, member of staff, special constable or volunteer.
