Roads Policing officers worked with the Safer Essex Roads Partnership and School Speedwatch to hold a day of action on Wednesday 15 May, highlighting road safety issues and targeting drivers who were breaking the law in Chelmsford.
The partners worked together in support of Vision Zero – our joint ambition to have zero road deaths in Essex by 2040 or sooner - by tackling offences such as speeding and not wearing seatbelts and to educate drivers about the importance of driving safely and responsibly.
At the at Meteor Way static site, off Waterhouse Lane, officers arrested a driver for drug driving and a driver in connection with no insurance.
In total, 60 traffic offence reports were issued and three cars seized for no insurance.
Traffic reports were issued for 27 seat belt offences, 19 mobile phone offences and four insurance and driving licence offences. Three cars were seized for no insurance and a further three were given tickets for excessive speed, including a taxi driving at 41mph in a 30 zone.
Thanks to the Year 5 students from The Bishop’s School, 15 drivers were spoken to about the negative impact speeding has in the vicinity of schools and highlighting the importance of road safety for all.
The condition and roadworthiness of vehicles were checked by the team to ensure vehicles were fit and safe to be on the roads. Four drivers were reported for illegal vehicle registration plates and one vehicle was found to be unroadworthy and another didn’t have an MOT.
Window tints that were illegal were found on 16 windscreens, preventing a clear view for each of the drivers. The tints were removed by the drivers at the roadside.
Thankfully, 27 responsible drivers were allowed to go on their way after their vehicles and documents were found to be in order.
Adam Pipe, Essex Police’s Roads Policing Unit head, said:
As part of our commitment to road safety in Essex, we regularly carry out proactive patrols and speed checks.
Road safety continues to be a force priority.
We make every effort to reduce the number of fatalities on our roads and we will continue to educate and inform drivers about the impact dangerous driving can have on the wider community and enforce the law.
At Essex Police, we value difference. We know we’re strongest when we work together. And we want a workforce that represents our communities.
If you share our values and want to help people, keep people safe and catch criminals, then join us as a police officer, member of staff, special constable or volunteer.
