Well done to our colleagues who took part in this year’s RoadPeace Challenge as they cycled their way around Essex’s towns and villages to raise awareness about the number of people killed in collisions on the UK’s roads.
It’s the second year that police colleagues were joined by those in the Safer Essex Roads Partnership in a “Ride to Remember” event for RoadPeace, a national charity for road collision victims, and calling upon the public to join us in keeping roads in Essex safe.
PC Ben Houghton-Clarke said:
It was an honour to take part in such an important event with my colleagues and friends. We wanted to raise awareness of those who died in collisions last year and show our support to charities that help their families in the period after their death, especially RoadPeace.
I’d encourage all drivers and riders to play their part in road safety, taking measures that will keep them, their passengers and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians safe.
Each mile that was cycled represented a person who died as a result of a collision in Essex last year, 41 miles for 41 people.
We continue to work with all our road safety partners to keep our county’s roads safe.
Vision Zero is our ambition to have no road deaths in Essex by 2040 or sooner and any safety measure that supports that ambition is welcomed.
We’d encourage all drivers and two-wheel powered vehicles to take the Vision Zero Pledge and share our roads safely. On signing, you will be asked to take the following action to ensure your and others safety:
• To be alert, considerate and careful
• To drive within the posted speed limit
• To always wear a seatbelt
• To put your mobile phone away when driving
• To always ensure any alcohol or drugs have left your system before driving
