A dedicated operation targeting a series of burglaries in Basildon has seen a significant arrest made following a pursuit.
Officers have been working in response to a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries in Basildon and Brentwood.
This operation has involved multiple teams including Basildon Local Policing Team, our Dog Section, CID and our Road Crime Team.
As part of this response, officers deployed in the Basildon area engaged in a pursuit with a suspected stolen vehicle on false plates.
At around 7pm on Thursday 12 September, the vehicle, a BMW, was stopped in Upper Mayne and two occupants fled on foot.
They were detained a short time later thanks to the work of our Dog Section working with Police Dog Max.
A 17-year-old man from Basildon, and a 19-year-old man, from Romford, were arrested.
The 17-year-old is being questioned on suspicion of four counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.
The 19-year-old man will be passed to Metropolitan Police custody for questioning on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and burglary.
Detective Inspector Stuart Mitchell, of Basildon CID, said:
“We put in place a dedicated response to a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries, particularly in the Basildon area, some of which involved the subsequent theft of vehicles from outside properties.
“We understand just how concerning and frightening burglary offences are to our communities and this operation shows that these incidents are an absolute priority.
“Our enquiries are continuing into these incidents as we look to continue to build our case on the back of this significant arrest.”
