Basildon: Proactive patrol results in drugs charges

Two men have been charged with drug dealing offences and remanded in prison following quick work by officers on patrol.

On Tuesday 14 January officers were on patrol in Basildon when they spotted two men emerging from an alleyway together.

After the officers approached the pair, one of the men proceeded to flee and was seen to discard a bag.

He was swiftly detained.

Following a search, the officers seized a mobile phone and a number of wraps of suspected heroin.

Further searches at an address in Basildon uncovered a large bundle of suspected crack cocaine and heroin.

Charges have since been secured against:

  • James French, 33, of Pevensey Close, Basildon. Charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class A and possessing criminal property.
  • Ben O’Mahony, 39, of no fixed address. Charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class A.

Both men appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 15 January, where they were remanded in custody until a hearing at Basildon Crown Court on 14 February.

Worried about a friend?

Are you worried that a friend or someone you know may be being exploited through County Lines or organised criminal activity?

Maybe they are returning home late, staying out all night or even going missing for days or weeks at a time.

Are they suddenly being secretive about who they are talking to or where they are going?

Or perhaps you’ve noticed they have large amounts of money on them, or new clothing, jewellery or phones they wouldn’t be able to afford.

Through Fearless, young people can pass on information 100% anonymously to get help.

If you need help from police, call 101 or, if it's an emergency, always call 999.
