Essex Police is committed to promoting road safety and reducing the number of fatal collisions on our roads in 2025.

As part of our ongoing efforts, we want to raise awareness about the importance of road safety and encourage responsible driving behaviour as part of the Vision Zero campaign.

Our Roads Policing Unit are a team of officers dedicated to road safety. Each day they patrol our roads to ensure the roads are safe, to keep traffic moving and to identify those involved in the criminal use of our roads.

Sadly, in December last year, there were seven fatal collisions across the county.

Head of Roads Policing, Mr Adam Pipe, said:

“Every year, thousands of lives are lost due to road collisions. By prioritising road safety, we can significantly reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries, ensuring that more people return home safely to their families.
“Some collisions result in severe injuries that can have long-lasting effects on individuals and their families so it’s important to us to work with partners to ensure road safety.
“Safety is as simple as ABC… Always Be Careful.”

Essex Police are part of the Safer Essex Roads Partnership and together we are supporting Vision Zero, our joint ambition to have zero road deaths by 2040 or sooner.

It’s a road safety campaign to encourage responsible driving behaviour, such as obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions, and not driving under the influence of drink or drugs: behaviours that are essential for creating a safer driving environment for everyone, and through vital enforcement action, we can enhance road safety measures that ensures all our road users are safe.

Detective Inspector Mark Fraser of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit who investigate fatal collisions in Essex said:

“Bereaved families want to know why their loved ones died and it’s our job to support them throughout an emotionally difficult time for them.
“My officers’ professionalism sees them balance compassion for the victim’s family during what are ultimately very sensitive and sometimes lengthy and detailed investigations but balanced against the ultimate need for justice.
“Our investigation won’t bring their loved one back, but we can and will see any case where the law has been broken or poor and dangerous driving is a contributing factor to the fatal collision, be brought before the court.”

We continue to engage with local communities to understand their specific road safety concerns and work together with SERP partners to find effective solutions.

We invite everyone to join us in our mission to make our roads safer. Together, we can prevent fatal collisions and create a safer environment for all road users.

Extra Eyes

Help us reduce road collisions and casualties in Essex and make our roads even safer. Report instances of poor and dangerous driving through Safer Essex Roads Partnership's Extra Eyes initiative.

More than ever, irresponsible, dangerous and illegal road behaviour is being recorded by road users. Through Extra Eyes this footage can be sent to, and reviewed by, an investigator within Road Policing at Essex Police.

Find out how by visiting Safer Essex Roads Partnership website.
