Sarjit Sehmi of no fixed address, Epping, appeared at Southend-on-Sea Magistrates' Court on Thursday 9 January to answer two charges of theft from a vehicle that occurred the previous day.
The 37-year-old had been detained by the van driver and his passenger after he was disturbed at the rear door of their van in Chase Road, Brentwood.
When officers from Brentwood Local Policing Team arrived, Sarjit Sehmi was found to be in possession of personal property left in the van.
He was remanded into custody to appear in court the following day where he admitted to stealing a set of Airpods and several vapes from the van as it was being loaded up for the day, on the morning of Wednesday 8 January.
He was sentenced to a Community Order of 60 hours unpaid work and costs.
Community Policing Team office PC Rebecca Ryan, said:
Theft from any vehicle is totally unacceptable and we will always take robust action to bring those concerned before the courts.
We’d like to thank the men who took positive action and detained Sehmi, allowing us to quickly gather the evidence needed to bring this case before the court the next day.
Thanks to the hard work of our officers, vehicle thefts have been reduced across Brentwood. In 2024 there were 127 less vehicle thefts than in the previous year.
We would always recommend that if you are a victim of crime, to call us so we can deal. Please, do not do attempt anything that could threaten your own safety.
