Celebrating Dedication: Special Constabulary Annual Awards Ceremony

In a heartfelt celebration of courage, commitment, and community spirit, we proudly hosted our annual Specials Constabulary Awards Ceremony. A night dedicated to recognising the extraordinary contributions of those who volunteer their time, energy, and hearts to serve and protect the people of Essex.

A group of people in uniform stand on a stage receiving awards, with an audience seated in front. The backdrop displays 'Essex Police' logos, and a table with more awards is visible to the right.

The awards evening brought together officers, families, colleagues and honorary guest Police Fire & Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst to applaud the exceptional work of our volunteer force. These individuals, known as Special Constables, are volunteer police officers who hold the same powers as regular officers. But here's the twist, they do it all while balancing day jobs, family life, and personal commitments with their roles as officers. Giving up evenings, weekends, and holidays to help keep our county safe.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper opened the evening with a tribute to the unwavering dedication of the Special Constabulary.

“We celebrate not just excellence, but the extraordinary. In a world that moves faster than ever, it’s easy to overlook the quiet acts of kindness, the acts of courage, the creative sparks that light the way forward. But not tonight.
"Tonight, we pause to recognise the individuals and teams whose work has not only made a difference, but made us different; more inspired, more connected, more hopeful.
"Essex Police remains the second largest Special Constabulary in England and Wales with 247 special constables, behind only the Metropolitan Police. We have special constables working alongside our regular colleagues in numerous teams, a sign of the progression The Special Constabulary has had with what roles are offered to them. We have Special Constables on the marine unit, working with our dog handlers, working in Major Crime, search trained officers, traffic and many more.”

A Force Built on Dedication

Special Constables support regular officers in all areas of frontline policing, from tackling crime and anti-social behaviour to supporting major incidents and community events.

In the last 6 months Special Constables delivered 39,1628 hours of which 28,835 hours were operational. This is equivalent to the working time provided by 47.76 full time police officers. In addition, the 247 specials have averaged 26.7 hours each per month, the expectation is 16 hours a month this is 10.7 hours more than we ask.

The ceremony was not only a celebration but a reminder of the power of public service. It was an opportunity to say thank you, not just from the force, but on behalf of every resident whose life has been made safer thanks to these unsung heroes.

Celebrating Standout Achievements

Among the many highlights of the evening was the presentation of awards recognising exceptional service, bravery, and unwavering commitment.

From stepping in during critical incidents, mentoring new recruits, or consistently going above and beyond to support their teams and communities. These awards not only celebrated individual excellence but also reflected the collective strength and spirit of the Special Constabulary.

Looking to the Future

As the ceremony drew to a close, the atmosphere was one of unity and pride. We were reminded that behind every uniform is a person who chooses to make a difference, not for recognition, but because they care.

A police officer speaks at a podium on a stage with an 'Essex Police' backdrop, flanked by two seated individuals. A table with awards is on the stage, and the audience is seated facing them.

ACC Stuart Hooper offered closing remarks:

“To the families and loved ones here tonight, thank you. Your support behind the scenes makes this service possible. You share in the sacrifices, and you too are part of this policing family.

"To our colleagues and partners, thank you for fostering an environment where Specials are valued, empowered, and integrated into the very fabric of our force.

"And finally, to every Special Constable, please know that your contribution is seen, appreciated, and celebrated. You are an inspiration to us all.”

The strength of Essex Police lies in the people who serve it. Our Special Constables are the very definition of service and sacrifice. They show up. They support.  They serve with heart. To all our Specials past, present, and future, we can’t thank you enough.

My other life

Special Constables, are volunteer police officers. They have the same police powers, uniforms and equipment as regular police officers. But Special Constables volunteer their time to help people and communities across Essex.
