Essex Police’s Rural Engagement Team has recovered around £210,000 worth of stolen rural machinery after the effective use of tracker activation data and close coordination with supporting colleagues.
The team is investigating the theft of 5 John Deere Gators and one telehandler, which were tracked to the Maldon area following a high value rural business burglary in North Essex.
The stolen equipment was located and recovered on the morning of Tuesday 21 April, less than 12 hours after the theft was reported, after tracker data was activated and acted upon swiftly.
The utility vehicles, commonly used in farm and rural business settings, were all recovered with only minor damage, significantly reducing financial loss and disruption to the victims.
Rural Engagement Team officer, PC Terry Verrall, said:
All items were recovered within 12 hours of being stolen, significantly reducing financial loss to the affected business.
Strong coordination with control room staff and the owner not only led to the timely recovery of all tracked machinery, but also to the identification of further stolen plant at the recovery location belonging to a separate victim, valued at £60,000.
It clearly demonstrates our commitment to tackling rural and business crime and using intelligence and technology to deliver results for victims.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by the Rural Engagement Team.

A significant part of RET’s work is centred on community engagement and crime prevention. Officers act as dedicated points of contact for rural communities, working closely with landowners, rural businesses and partner agencies. They also provide tailored crime prevention advice to help farmers and rural residents protect high value equipment and reduce vulnerability to theft.
