Neighbourhood Policing officers on patrol in Grays responded and arrested a man within 30 minutes of receiving the call.
We responded to the report of shop theft in Southend Road and a 27-year-old man was found and arrested just after 7pm following a foot chase through a housing estate.
William Birch, of Buckles Lane, South Ockendon, was later charged. He admitted the offence and was sentenced at Southend Magistrates’ Court on 2 June to a six-month conditional discharge.
We take shop theft seriously. It affects local businesses, staff and the community, and we will act quickly to catch those responsible.
The incident happened on 31 May, with the shop owner reporting that alcohol had been stolen at just after 6.30pm.
At Essex Police, we value difference. We know we’re strongest when we work together. And we want a workforce that represents our communities.
