Specials volunteer 750hrs during 'The Beast from the East'
Our Specials have volunteered a combined 750hrs on frontline duties since ‘The Beast from the East’ brought several inches of snow, ice and freezing temperatures to Essex.
Specials across the county have given up their free time to work alongside their regular colleagues and partner agencies helping to keep people safe in dangerous conditions.
In total, Specials have attended 41 traffic collisions and 230 incidents in the last four days. Some of the incidents attended include helping stranded motorists, searching for missing people and carrying out welfare checks on people confined to their homes.
Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh paid tribute to the dedication and commitment of the Specials and everyone working in the force. He said: “An enormous contribution from our Specials this week. So proud of all our officers, staff and Specials working on overdrive in terrible conditions.”
Essex Police Specials have the same police powers, uniforms and equipment as regular officers but sacrifice their free time on a voluntary basis, organising their busy personal lives, day jobs and other commitments around police duties
