Police Constable Geoffrey William Smith was the son of Robert and Ellen Smith and was born on 2nd September 1916 in Newchurch, Isle of Wight. Between 2nd February 1935 and 7th December 1938 he served with the Grenadier Guards, and then joined Essex County Constabulary on 3rd January 1939.
After training at Headquarters he transferred to Grays from 25th February 1939. However, he was recalled to his regiment on 4th December 1939.
He died on Wednesday, 24th March 1943 whilst serving as Serjeant 2614476 with 5th Battalion, Grenadier Guards. He was aged 26 and left a widow, Eveline Vera Smith, of Chelsea, London. He was buried at Grave 5. B. 17. in the Medjez-El-Bab War Cemetery in Tunisia.
