Museum - Tour Guide
Based at the Essex Police Museum, Headquarters. Chelmsford.
Hours
Attending group visits when needed, typically 1 visit per week dependent on demand and volunteer cover arrangements.
Depending on the requirements of the group, visits last between 1.5 and 3 hours. You should allow half an hour before and after each group visit for set up and pack down.
Reporting to:
Museum Curator, Tour Guide Leader.
Working alongside:
Museum Curator, Tour Guide Team Leader, Tour Guide Volunteer.
Responsibilities
- Attend the Essex Police Museum at times and days of the week as agreed with the Tour Guide Team Leader in advance. (Monday – Saturdays, daytime or evening; flexible)
- Conduct guided tours of Essex Police Museum, the Force Information Room and the HQ Site
- Follow a script supported by a Power Point presentation
- Support museum events, such as Heritage Open Days
- Staff the museum shop
- Carry out general museum maintenance
Note: Volunteers will not work alone and will always be supported by one other volunteer or the Tour Guide Team Leader.
Further note: Group visits include all ages, from children to the elderly and those with additional needs. All necessary training will be provided but you should be comfortable interacting with both children and adults.
Skills
- Personal email address (used by the Curator and Tour Guide Team Leader for communication)
- Confident speaking to groups

Tour and site-specific knowledge – no previous police history knowledge required
IT skills and requirements
None.
Transport
No driving licence or personal transport required. Public transport to HQ is available
Equality Act considerations
Wheelchair users may struggle with some areas of the HQ tour and getting water for group visit refreshments, but group visits should have a minimum of 2 volunteers so there should be someone else to help.
