For more than two decades, Julia Finch has been at the heart of Essex Police. Through her role in armed policing, she has helped to make sure our communities stay safe. As Force Support Unit (FSU) Chief Inspector, Julia manages armed operations. This includes assessing threats, and deploying specialist officers to protect the public.
Julia's journey into policing wasn’t one she expected. While working as a legal secretary, at the age of 18, she became a Special Constable. It was meant to be a short-term adventure alongside her career. But six years later and having seen the positive impact policing could have, she decided to become a full-time police officer.
Over the next 22 years, Julia gained a wealth of policing experience, worked hard and moved up through the ranks. Now she holds a leadership role in one of the most demanding areas of policing.
In her role, Julia must make quick, crucial decisions. As one of only 14 accredited Cadre Tactical Firearms Commanders in Essex Police, she leads on firearms operations. This includes responding to immediate threats and planning protection for visiting dignitaries. Balancing operational demands with her leadership responsibilities is no small task. But Julia thrives on the challenge.
One of the most rewarding parts of her career has been looking after officer welfare and making sure they are okay. As a Post Incident Manager and a Trauma Risk Management Practitioner, Julia understands the psychological impact high-risk policing can have. She explains:
"Our FSU often attends incidents involving death and serious injuries.
"These circumstances aren't easy to deal with and it can take it's toll. Ensuring officers have the right support in place is crucial.”
While Julia hasn't been a firearms officer herself, she understands the realities and responsibilities that come with the role. Julia admits:
"It was a steep learning curve.
"Understanding what it's like to carry a specialist weapon or having to contain an area for hours in freezing conditions is something I had to learn from my team.”
But, she’s never let challenges hold her back. Julia believes in leading with empathy, listening to her team, and making informed decisions.
Her advice to those considering a career in policing is to think about becoming a Special Constable first, like she did.
"Being a Special Constable gives you a real insight into the world of policing.
"Of course, as with any career, policing has its tough days, but it’s like joining the biggest family. And support is always there for you."
As we shine a light on International Women’s, Julia reflects on the progress made in policing:
"It’s important to celebrate how far we’ve come. Women are capable of anything, and there are no barriers that can’t be overcome."
Julia is an executive representative for the Essex Police Women's Forum, where she champions initiatives that promote equality and support female officers.
And while she hasn't experienced barriers as a woman in policing, Julia acknowledges the challenges many female officers juggle. Particularly when is comes to balancing careers with family responsibilities.
"I’m in awe of those who do it all—it’s very inspiring."
February 2025 saw Julia step into an exciting new role at Stansted Airport. As Airport Commander she leads both armed and community policing teams, overseeing operations at one of the UK's busiest airports.
Her role includes managing disruptive passengers, enforcing airport by-laws, coordinating responses for major incidents and safeguarding national aviation security. It's a fast-paced role with high-stakes. But for Julia, it’s an opportunity to learn, lead, and make a real impact.
Julia's career has taken her through a variety of leadership roles. But one thing remains a constant - her dedication to keeping people safe and supporting those on the front line.
And when the pressures of the job mount? She laces up her running shoes.
Whether training for marathons or leading in high-pressure situations, Julia Finch continues to push boundaries - proving that in policing, determination knows no limits.
At Essex Police, we value difference. We know we’re strongest when we work together. And we want a workforce that represents our communities.
If you share our values and want to help people, keep people safe and catch criminals, then join us as a police officer, member of staff, special constable or volunteer.
