Main purpose of the role

Conduct investigations into complex, series and serious fraud allegations ensuring the best possible evidence is secured and that cases are fully and efficiently investigated in order to detect offences allowing a considered decision to be taken about the prosecution of offenders.

Main responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations into allegations of complex fraud using specialist knowledge in interviewing techniques, document analysis and exhibit handling etc. Collate, analyse and assess information in order to determine the best lines of enquiry.
  • Secure the best evidence through thorough investigation and effective management of all available resources, working to an agreed case investigation plan. Where all useful lines of enquiry have been explored, make a clear recommendation as to the appropriate disposal.
  • Submit complete and correctly compiled case papers maintaining high professional standards and ensuring evidential integrity.
  • Collect, evaluate and disseminate all information of intelligence value gained in the course of investigations to legitimate interested parties. Work closely with Fraud Squad and Divisional intelligence officers in order to maintain an effective and accurate Force intelligence system supporting the National network through liaison with SO6.
  • Maintain close links with external agencies such as banks/financial institutions giving presentations if necessary in order to raise the levels of awareness on current fraud trends and prevent/detect offences.
  • Assist Divisional officers giving advice and support in Fraud skills and knowledge where necessary.
  • Assist in prisoner handling or outside enquiries for adhoc operations as requested by supervisors.

Technical skills

Crime Investigation (Level 4)

Able to recognise potential conflicts of interest between solicitors and suspects. Effectively plans and prepares work in order to progress investigatons. Analyses results obtained from interviews etc., in order to identify further offences, offenders and lines of enquiry. Has a comprehensive understanding of identification policies, procedures and their applications. Submits high quality reports and case files within time limits. Has an appreciation of the operating practices of the intelligence unit.

Forensic - Crime Scene Management (Level 3)

Has a working knowledge of the preservation of evidence and practical experience in identifying scene parameters and securing crime scenes. Aware of the method of establishing and clearing a common approach path. Possesses a basic knowledge of the concepts of forensic evidence and the technical aids available within Force. Understands issues relating to scene contamination and can take practical steps to avoid it.

Fraud (Level 4)

Demonstrates a good working knowledge of the formation and structure of companies and businesses. Understands the principles of banking. Has a good understanding of how to obtain confidential material and  the confiscation of assests obtained as a result of criminal conduct.

Health & Safety (Level 3)

Management of Police Information (MOPI) (Level 4)

Full compliance with Level 3. Has successfully completed all standard relevant Information Management and Security training package(s). Accurate use of Government Security Classification (GSC). Ensures physical and digital records are stored with appropriate security relevant to the sensitivity of the documents and has working understanding of appropriate National Retention Schedules. Is able to quality assure own records management processes as well as those of any staff for whom they have supervisory responsibility. Is aware of where to seek further support in relation to Records management within force when necessary. If nominated as an Information Asset Assistant is familiar with the NPCC Information Asset Owners Handbook.
