Meet Gill and Richard Harwood, who volunteer with our team which manages sexual offenders and violent offenders (MOSOVO).

Richard was a helicopter pilot and Gill a helicopter flight instructor. After retiring, they sailed a catamaran around the Mediterranean for two years, before living in Australia and running their own electronics company for seven years. When grandchildren arrived, they returned to the UK and found they had some spare time on their hands.

Richard started volunteering with us first, starting out in 2018 with our Drone Unit. Gill joined the MOSOVO team 18 months ago. Richard says he then joined her in MOSOVO ‘as I saw from my wife’s volunteering that it was important work’.’

Gill explains: “I chose to volunteer with the MOSOVO team because it seemed I could play a very worthwhile and important part.

“I help with all the very time-consuming form filling, acquiring information from police databases and doing address checks on registered sex offenders.

“I enjoy the fact that I am helping to ease the heavy load on our police and giving the MOSOVO team more time to do more important tasks.

“I would recommend volunteering with MOSOVO, as long as you have a broad mind and are mentally able to cope with what goes on out there.”

Richard says: “In my role I do general documentation. My main task is creating spreadsheets and documents.

“I enjoy the varied work and being able to give back to the community. I would recommend being a MOSOVO volunteer as it is a very worthwhile part of policing.”
