Main purpose of the role:
To supervise, co-ordinate and develop a team of investigators involved in the investigation of rape, penetrative offences and other serious sexual crimes, ensuring evidence is secured and cases are proportionately investigated To work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and other key partners, ensuring that victims are provided the best quality service with their needs and wishes being at the centre of an investigation. To ensure offenders are prosecuted and brought to justice wherever possible.
Supervise the investigation of rapes, penetrative offences and other serious sexual crimes including offender processing, quality assurance and sign off for evidential files, ensuring case papers are completed to the highest professional standards, within set time limits. Appearance at court as necessary.
Take a supervisory lead in conducting investigations and securing the best possible evidence to detect the crimes and bring offenders to justice. Ensure that the victims views and wishes are at the centre of an investigation.
Evaluate and prioritise the allocation of crimes.
Supervise and participate in interviews as necessary, to ensure all proportionate lines of enquiry have been explored.
Ensure that all information of value gained during the course of investigations is communicated record and submitted in the appropriate format, in line with legislation and policy.
Liaise closely with all other departments and LPA colleagues, ensuring a cohesive approach to incidents and investigations where appropriate.
Attend meetings, briefings as required.
There may be a requirement to deputise for the Detective Inspector as required.
Undertake such duties as reasonably required as part of the night cover, providing Detective capability across the county.

The investigation of serious sexual offences requires a specialist approach with suitably trained DS in order to maximise all evidential opportunities available, and to provide the best possible service to victims. Officers need to be flexible as there is a necessity to work some un- social hours. You will be required to travel countywide according to operational requirements. Plain clothes will be worn.
