Main purpose of the role:
Conduct pro-active research and reactive investigations into the supply of drugs, with the focus to supply necessary information throughout the process so operational teams can pursue and dismantle the priority Gangs and County Lines in Essex. Develop and utilise communication data as part of the investigation process, evidencing the marketing of any data, which advertises the sale of class A drugs and utilise this to provide best evidence in the progression of cases.
Undertake proactive research and investigations into the supply of drugs in Essex, the focus is to identify Gangs and County lines who are concerned in the supply of drugs through communication data and utilise this to provide the best evidence available.
Develop all available Optica/communication Data opportunities to identify evidence to support prosecutions in the upstreaming of the supply of drugs in Essex, producing comprehensive evidential statements.
Proactively identify emerging County Lines, Intelligence, drugs profile trends and changes in drugs marketing/advertising and link any safeguarding/exploitation concerns, mitigating where necessary or make the appropriate safeguarding referrals and liaise directly with other agencies or VVU.
Undertake interviews of witnesses and victims of crime, including interviews with vulnerable witnesses, assisting in regard to suspect interviews, taking high quality, accurate statements for inclusion into case files and undertaking assessment of the veracity of statements and the potential reliability of witnesses in court in order to ensure evidence is correctly captured and recorded to support investigations.
Coordinate and manage the seizure and viewing of CCTV, viewing material, analysing information, and recording elements in comprehensive reports of evidential and intelligence value; coordinate house to house enquiries, instructing officers as required, in order to support investigations and also provide evidence in person at court as required.
Undertake a range of investigative research through Athena, PNC, telephony, ANPR and other relevant systems/ procedures, maintaining accurate records, analysing information, and producing a range of reports, in order to support the investigation of serious violence across the Operational Policing Command.
Assist in crime investigation searches across the Serious Violence Teams, and act as exhibits officer, ensuring the integrity of evidence retrieved, recording receipt of exhibits, organising the storage and appropriate security of exhibits, including the handling of hazardous materials and returning items when authorised to do so, in order to ensure the continuity of evidence and the correct recording of physical evidence and property.
Build, complete and correctly compile case papers, witness and exhibit lists, undertaking the case disclosure role wherever necessary; give evidence in person at court, in the capacity of a number of roles, in order to ensure that high professional standards and evidential integrity are achieved on each case.

Recruitment Vetting, (RV).
The post holder will need to have a good standard of education; to at least A level (or equivalent) in English and Maths. They will also need to have at least 2 years experience of working in an investigative role; ideally within policing.
The post holder will be required to work to strict deadlines and therefore must be organised and able to effectively prioritise workload. Excellent communication skills are required, along with the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Comprehensive IT skills are essential, including Microsoft Office products. Knowledge of Police systems, in particular Chorus, would be an advantage.
PIP Level 2 qualification would also be an advantage.
The post holder will have experience of how to develop, obtain and use communication data in an operational setting. Recent experience in criminal investigations utilising multiple lines of data, conducting interviews and taking statements in investigative processes would be an advantage but is not essential.
The ability to work with minimal supervision and maturity, confidence and professionalism are necessary in order to deal with a wide range of situations. The ability to present well is essential due to the requirement to attend court.
This role is a designated post. A high level of integrity is required due to the confidential and sensitive material dealt with by the post holder.
The post holder will be required to travel as part of their duty and therefore a full UK driving licence is essential.
The post holder must be flexible and prepared to work extended hours at short notice as required in order to support urgent operational needs. Have and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and force policy, for example criminal law, PACE and CPIA and IPA, in order to ensure crime investigations and documentation is of the highest standard and complies with such legislation and policy.

Shows use of this style of interviewing and can apply it operationally giving consideration to identification and procedural issues. Successfully undertakes initial telephone investigation of crime.
Know. of Police Environment & Policy (Level 3)
Has a basic awareness of current policing issues, the environment in which Kent Police and / or Essex Police operate and developments in the way the County is policed. Possesses sufficient knowledge of the roles of the various Areas / Departments, organisation structures and police systems to operate effectively. Understands appreciates and adheres to working procedures, practices and policies relevant to the current role. Familiar with Force goals and local business plan objectives.
Knowledge of Legislation and Policy (Level 3)
Demonstrates a sound working knowledge of all legislation, policies and procedures relevant to the current role. Familiar with all five codes of practice but particularly well versed in the practical application of codes A, B and E. Able to apply this knowledge to suit the needs of the current role.
Mgmt of Police Information (MOPI) (Level 3)

Able to utilise relevant Force standard office software products such as word- processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and desktop publishing packages to a standard that matches the requirements of the current role in terms of quality and speed. Can operate other items of essential office technology such as photocopiers, facsimile machines, answerphones, shredders, in order to effectively undertake the requirements of the current role.
