Main purpose of the role:
Working as part of a team to provide comprehensive support, including some driving duties, to the Chief Officers and assist with their respective programmes of work. Monitoring force and local performance for relevant area of work. Working at a strategic level networking with colleagues within Essex Police and other Forces. Carry out a research and policy development function, supporting the policy making process by working with Chief Officers and members of the programme boards.
Provide a complete and comprehensive support service to Chief Officers in relation to a wide range of documents, reports and correspondence both internally and externally in relation to designated ACPO business areas.
Manage projects on behalf of the Chief Officer and senior officers as necessary, co-ordinating actions, undertaking research, monitoring progress and ensuring deadlines are met in order to provide the necessary professional service.
Decide on course of action, drafting replies as necessary to ensure a continuing high level of assistance at all times.
Undertakes all necessary planning, arrangements and research on national, regional and local issues, and provides a full briefing to ensure that the Chief Officer is appropriately prepared.
Research and produce presentations on behalf of the Chief Officer, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of all such information produced.
Undertakes research and analysis concerning national and regional policy, organisational and policing issues and other wide ranging tasks as delegated by Chief Officers or the Staff Officer to the Chief Constable/Deputy Chief Constable.
Monitor media and ACPO websites, as directed, to identify issues of relevance for Chief Officers.
Plan and prepare for visits by and to external and partner organisations, making any necessary arrangements to ensure that guests are appropriately treated, that good relationships can be fostered and that visits can be productive and meet the needs of both parties.
Attend daily force briefings to record and coordinate fast track actions.
Accompany and assist the Chief Officer when visiting Divisions and Departments as well as visits to other Forces, National Conferences or functions.
Supports the Chief Officer at major events and incidents.
Co-ordinate and attend ACPO meetings in the Performance Management business areas.
Deal with confidential and highly sensitive information including incidents where threats to security exist.
Keeps up-to-date with changes in legislation and Force Policy, develops and maintains close working relationships politically and operationally with senior officers of the Force, the Home Office, M.P.-s, Essex Police and Crime Commissioner, other Forces, ACPO and policing agencies to facilitate the good reputation of the Force.
Undertakes such other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time.

Management vetting required
Hours worked are usually 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday though the post holder must be prepared to be flexible and work occasional weekends and/or evenings. Need to travel countrywide and regularly visit other Forces; some driving duties will be required. The post holder will deal with confidential and highly sensitive information including incidents where threats to security exist.
This post is deemed to be a designated post.
Vetting clearance is a pre-requisite of employment in designated posts and the post holder will be subject to management vetting assessment every 7 years. National security vetting clearances are reviewed every 10 years.

Management of Police Information (MOPI) (Level 4)
Full compliance with Level 3. Has successfully completed all standard relevant Information Management and Security training package(s). Accurate use of Government Security Classification (GSC). Ensures physical and digital records are stored with appropriate security relevant to the sensitivity of the documents and has working understanding of appropriate National Retention Schedules. Is able to quality assure own records management processes as well as those of any staff for whom they have supervisory responsibility. Is aware of where to seek further support in relation to Records management within force when necessary. If nominated as an Information Asset Assistant is familiar with the NPCC Information Asset Owners Handbook.
Office Technology (Level 4)
Demonstrates advanced skills in the use of one or more office software products Able to use these packages to enhance the quality or presentation of work required within the role. Manages data files and file structures. Provides on the job training and guidance to other staff in the use of specific or specialist software, if required. Familiar with established IT rules and protocols and shows a good understanding of data protection requirements.
Project Management (Level 3)
Demonstrates an understanding of the key principles of project management. Able to assist in the management of projects within a Department or Division where the objectives, milestones and timescales have already been defined and manpower resources are limited. Will need project management support.

Able to analyse reports and data produced by other individuals/ organisations and extract relevant details to support the project in hand. Produces a range of options for consideration. Able to anticipate, accurately define and establish the relative level of risk likely to affect their specialist function, in terms of likelihood and impact, together with how the challenges facing the wider organisation might affect their role within the force.
