Local people in the Chelmsford district have said they are concerned about violent crime.
Issued 05 May 2026
In areas where violent crime has been reported, our officers are increasing patrols to prevent incidents and respond quickly when needed. This includes addressing issues linked to the night-time economy, such as those occurring in bars, clubs, and busy public spaces.
We are also using innovative tools, including live facial recognition technology and CCTV to help identify individuals involved in crime and ensure they are held accountable.
Working alongside local organisations such as Chelmsford City Council, we remain committed to identifying and tackling ongoing issues within our communities. Through partnership and proactive policing, we aim to make Chelmsford a safer place for everyone.

We have seen a noticeable increase in shoplifting within Chelmsford city centre, and addressing this issue remains a key focus for our officers.
Issued 05 May 2026
Shoplifting not only causes financial loss to local businesses but also creates stress for staff and customers, impacting the sense of safety in our community.
To tackle this problem, our teams are increasing high-visibility patrols in retail areas to deter offenders and provide reassurance. We are working closely with store security teams and business partners to share intelligence and identify repeat offenders. Using data-led approaches, we target hotspot locations and deploy resources where they are most needed. At the same time, we continue to offer crime prevention advice to businesses and encourage reporting through the appropriate channels.
Our commitment is to reduce shoplifting and support the local economy by ensuring Chelmsford remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Although anti-social behaviour (ASB) is decreasing, it remains a key concern for residents and business in the Chelmsford city centre.
Issued 05 May 2026
We know how anti-social behaviour (ASB) can have a serious impact on community life, causing fear, anxiety, and isolation, affecting mental health and disrupting daily routines. Our Neighbourhood Policing Team works closely with partners, including Chelmsford City Council, to address ASB in all its forms.
We focus on identifying emerging trends and sharing practical advice with residents and businesses to help protect them from its effects and ensure they know how best to report incidents.
By working together with our partners and the community, we aim to reduce ASB and create safer, stronger neighbourhoods for everyone.
