Start by reviewing our application and interview guidance to help you make a strong application. You’ll need to complete an online form, but you can also attend one of our Encounter Essex workshops for extra support and advice. These workshops are a great way to learn more about the role and get help with your application.

This stage involves two online assessments: - Situational Judgement Test (SJT) – tests how you respond to different scenarios. - Behavioural Styles Questionnaire (BSQ) – looks at your personality and working style. You can find more details on the College of Policing website.
We check that you meet the basic requirements to join Essex Police. This includes things like age, qualifications, and background checks.
You’ll be invited to an online briefing session. This is an important part of the process where we explain what happens next and what we’re looking for in candidates. It’s a chance to ask questions and get prepared.

You’ll attend a face-to-face interview with officers and staff.
We carry out background checks on you and some family members. You’ll also need to ask your GP to send us medical forms confidentially. This helps us make sure you’re fit and ready for the role.
At Essex Police, we value difference. We know we’re strongest when we work together. And we want a workforce that represents our communities.
If you share our values and want to help people, keep people safe and catch criminals, then join us as a police officer, member of staff, special constable or volunteer.
